Welcome

The Superintendent of Schools shall strive to achieve District goals for students by providing educational direction and supervision to the professional staff and supervision to the non-teaching staff and by acting as a proper model for staff and students both in the school and outside the District.

The Superintendent of Schools is the chief executive and administrative officer of the Board. The Superintendent reports directly to the Board, has all powers and duties imposed upon the office by statute, and has all executive and administrative powers and duties in connection with the overall operation of the school which are not required by statute to be exercised directly by the Board or some other officer. The Superintendent exercises leadership through school administrators who comprise the Leadership Team.

A Message from the Superintendent

It is hard to believe November is here, and the weather has been somewhat pleasant. However, with winter just around the corner, below is a link to our school closing and delay information. Please take the time to review and make plans if we do have a delay or close school: School Closings & Delays.

Canal Winchester is a great place to live and raise a family, and we believe our school system plays an important role in our community’s success. In Canal Winchester Schools, a great education starts with high-quality teachers in the classroom, caring families, and a community that is willing to support the work we do every day.

Our job is to provide opportunities so today’s students have the skills they need to be successful in careers, college, and life. To accomplish this we use STEM, Strategies That Engage Minds, an educational approach for all students in grades K-12 which moves from a typical teacher-centered classroom to a more student-centered, hands-on approach. STEM has several focus areas:

Project Based Learning: (Often referred to as PBL’s) a dynamic classroom approach

where students gain knowledge and skills by actively exploring real world problems and challenges and developing solutions.

The 4 C’s: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. These are the skills our students need today to be successful in life.

Career Pathways which include: Health Information, Medical, Business, Pharmacy Technician, CISCO Networking Academy & Risk Management/Insurance. These pathways expose students to relevant coursework and training, such as business management and marketing, biomedical sciences, and the insurance industry.

College Credit Plus students can earn both high school and college credit at the same time. Students can earn a certificate after completion of certain courses that give them as advantage when applying for jobs after high school.

Now more than ever, the school experience must not only provide for the acquisition of rigorous academic content, but it must also be more intentional about fostering critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, and other 21st century skills and habits of mind that our students need to navigate and thrive in this complex, rapidly-changing world.

Many school systems across the country have engaged their larger community in developing a Portrait of a Graduate, a collective vision that articulates the community’s aspirations for their students. Here at Canal Winchester Local Schools, we will be partnering with our community to do just that.

On Wednesday, December 5, from 6:00 -8:00 pm, in the Canal Winchester High School cafeteria, I would like to invite you to a community meeting to discuss the skills, competencies, character traits, and habits of mind our children need for success in this rapidly changing world. No RSVP required. Please join us for this important gathering as we lay the foundation for shaping our leaders of tomorrow.

Sincerely,

James Sotlar, Superintendent
